Surveying for protected species is a major part of the work we do at Devon & Cornwall Ecology, particularly the ones most commonly encountered by homeowners and developers. Using current best practice guidelines, we are able to survey, assess and monitor a range of species. This means we are well placed to prepare and implement any mitigation measures that may be necessary for your site. In more complex cases, we can also arrange for European Protected Species licences to be issued by Natural England to allow your development to proceed in accordance with the law.

Bat surveys

The most commonly requested survey we undertake, our ecologists are experienced in all aspects of bat surveys and can provide you with the necessary reports, advice and assistance for your planning application. Prices can vary depending on the site and number of buildings, but usually start at £225.

Reptile surveys and translocations

Our experienced ecologists can assist in all aspects of reptile work; undertaking the initial presence/absence surveys, designing and implementing mitigation measures if they are present and undertaking translocations to remove them safely from your construction area.

Badger surveys

Where badger setts are suspected on or near a development site, badger surveys are often undertaken to establish if the sett is active and, if needed, to gather the information required to safely move the badgers and close the sett under a licence from Natural England.

Barn Owl surveys

Conversions of older, traditional style barns and outbuildings often require a specialist barn owl survey. Our ecologists are experienced and capable of undertaking this survey individually or as part of our Phase 1 bat survey.

Dormouse surveys

Developments that affect suitable dormouse habitats such as woodlands and hedgerows will often require a dormouse survey. Our ecologists can undertake these surveys from April to October to confirm the presence or absence of dormice, as well as provide advice on suitable mitigation and compensation measures if they are present.

Hedgerow surveys

Certain hedgerows are protected under the Hedgerows Regulations 1997 and it is against the law to remove them without permission from the local planning authority. Devon & Cornwall Ecology can undertake surveys to establish whether your hedgerows are classed as 'Important' under the regulations and prepare the necessary reports to present to the planning authority.
And many more!
